Catching up

So it's been a little bit since I last blogged. The kids are now finished with summer school. They had a fun couple of weeks and made new friends. One of Madison's friends we see at the pool quite a bit, so that is nice for her. It doesn't take much for Jonathan to make new friends; while at the pool the other evening he started playing with another little boy and then I heard him ask "do you want to be my friend?" It was priceless. I just wish he would learn to 'catch' the names. He never 'catches' them as he puts it =) Ha Ha Madison will have three teachers for third grade. They will switch classes during the day, though one of the three teachers will be her homeroom teacher. Jonathan's classroom is big (in my mind). He thought it was so cool that they had their own bathroom. Oh the little things! He has done really good though. They have been learning about animals and the last few days they made zoo keeper hats and zoo keeper binoculars (which went along with us going to the zoo over the weekend). It wasn't planned that way.

Kenny went to Illinois on Friday for meetings. It was a long day for him...more driving than meetings. He made some headway though with some situations that have been going on at the farm, it was something that required higher authority so Kenny took advantage of being at the head office and was able to get some things accomplished and moving along. The kids and I spent the afternoon after school at the pool and relaxed here at home with a movie afterwards. Kenny finally got home around 11p.

With being at Illinois Friday and being in contact with others from other farms he had to go through a 2 day decontamination period before going back to his farm. It seems that they are a little anal/paranoid about the biosecurity, but with as many pigs as they are dealing with you kind of have to take things that far. None of us complained as it was our first weekend together since Kenny started working. I figured he would want to sleep in since he had been getting up at 4:30am in the mornings; I prepped the kids to sleep in b/c daddy was going to be tired. Of course, Kenny gets up at 6am and the rest of us sleep until 8a!

We finally got breakfast and got corraled up and headed to Kansas City. We wanted to get out of the house and do something with the kids so we went to the zoo. It was quite the adventure starting out. I mapquested directions before we left and somehow the street address got taken out and instead the directions took us to downtown Kansas City. Thank goodness we were there during the daytime! It was scarey!! We finally made our way back in the right direction. The zoo was very fun! It is a lot different than the Indianapolis Zoo. They have more outside animals than water exhibits. They will have a polar bear exhibit come next year; other than that they had otters and sea lions. When we got there we headed towards Australia and the Tiger trail...we saw Tigers, Red Pandas, Orangutans, Singing Dogs, Kangaroo's, Camels, and lots and lots of birds. There was a feeding area where the sheep were. The sheep of course were tame and the kids amazingly had no fear as they walked right up to them and petted them. They had gum ball machines with food that we put a quarter in so the kids could feed them. It was pretty funny, as Kenny put in the first quarter and turned it the first time, they heard that click and came running! They knew what was coming!!

We finished our adventure through Australia/Asia and got on the train to make our way over to the tram so we could get to Africa. {it’s ninety-five-acre Africa exhibit represents five nations with one of the most extensive collections of African animals ever seen.”} On the tram ride over we saw Flamingo's and Elephants. We were going to take a boat ride around, but missed the boat when we got off the tram and didn't want to wait 30 minutes for the net boat. So we hiked around Africa! Along our walk we saw Cheetahs, Warthogs, Tortoise, Vultures, Lemurs, African Aviary, Lions, Meerkats, Rhinos, Giraffe's, Zebra's, Bat-Eared Fox, Black-Footed Cat, Chimps, Hippo's, Crocodile's, Wild Dogs, Antelop's, Crane's, Wild Dogs, and Baboons. It was a long walk...over a mile around Africa. After finishing in Africa we took the tram back towards the center of the zoo and hit the 'Kid Zone' which is where the Sea Lion show was. They had a 7 year old and an 18 year old Sea Lion there at the show. We learned that some Sea Lions live up to be 10 years old, but these Sea Lions live up to 18 or 19 (probably b/c they are hand fed and well cared for).

After the Sea Lion show, the zoo was closing so we were able to take a ride on the Carousel before heading out. All in all it was a very fun day (despite the heat; it was 95 in the car when we parked to head in)! The kids did really good and enjoyed the day as well.

Enjoy the pictures!! (thought I would try something different this time since I have so many pictures of the zoo; I've uploaded them to snapfish)

However, I will share a picture and a story! We turned the corner in Africa and saw the baboon exhibit. There was a little baboon that ran right up to the glass when Jonathan walked up there. He immediately started showing off for us...running back and forth and jumping off the glass. He would always walk back over and sit in front of Jonathan. Jonathan would laugh and the baboon would laugh.

It was absolutely hilarious!! The two of them just connected =) We started interacting with him a little bit and the mother got a little upset about that. She ran over and slapped the glass in front of Kenny and the little baboon made his way back over towards the adults...head hung down...he knew he was in trouble.
